It’s always an exciting time of the year when you’re a Spyderco collector: the discontinued knives list. Firstly it’s good news if you’re just looking to pick up some discounted Spyderco knives as most of the major knife retailers like Blade HQ will heavily discount them until they’re sold out. Secondly if you’re a collector of these knives it means they’re no longer being made, which means they’ll be a whole lot more collectible now.
Obviously not all models will increase in value just because they’ve been discontinued. Some are discontinued for good reason, ie nobody wants them. There’s always a few gems that should be picked up though and the 2020 discontinued list of knives is no exception.
My pick of the Spyderco discontinued list for 2020 is the Sage 1 with the carbon fiber handle and the Michael Walker liner lock. If you don’t already own this knife it’s worth picking one up. The whole Sage series is a classic series in my humble opinion. It’s where Spyderco looks at the knife locks and mechanisms that are used in the folding knife industry. I’m guessing there are already a LOT of Sage 1 folders out there but as a series it’ll become very collectible over time.
Discontinued Byrd Folding Knives 2020
I must admit that I’ve never paid much attention to the Byrd range of knives put out by Spyderco. It’s their budget range of knives made in China. I’ve owned a few and they’re good quality but I would rather pay a few dollars more and just get the Spyderco models.
So there’s three Byrd models being discontinued. The Cara Cara 2 Titanium, Meadowlark 2 Titanium, and the Robin 2 Titanium. I haven’t owned any of the titanium model Byrd folders so I can’t say much about them.
Discontinued Spyderco Folding Knives 2020
I’m not going to rank them in any sort of order.
Spyderco Sage 1 (C123CFP) – Carbon fiber, CPM-S30V, liner lock. From the Sage series featuring locking mechanisms used in the pocket knife industry. The Sage 1 features the Michael Walker liner lock.
Spyderco Police Model 4 (C07GP4) – G10 handle, Böhler-Uddeholm K390 blade, back lock. Big solid folder but not one that I’ve ever kept for long. I do plan to buy a new lightweight Police model though.
Spyderco Lil’ Sub-Hilt G-10 (C224GP) – Stainless steel bolsters and polished G10 handle, CPM-S30V blade, liner lock. I like the full sized Vallotton Sub-Hilt more than this model but they’re both very interesting knives. I love how Spyderco does polished G-10 too. If my budget allows I might pick up a discontinued and discounted little Sub Hilt. Designed by Butch Vallotton.
Spyderco Hundred Pacer (C225GP) G-10 Handle, CTS-XHP blade, linerlock. I never did get around to owning this knife. I don’t think it’s the most attractive knife I’ve ever seen. Named because of the deadly snake, the Taiwanese viper which when bitten it is said that you have about 100 paces left to live. Designed by Jonny Liao. So I like the story behind the knife but I couldn’t get past the look of this one, which is odd really as one of my favorite knives is the Stretch 2, which is also said to be an ugly knife.
Spdyerco Mantra 2 (C203TIP) Titanium handle, CPM-M4 blade, Frame lock. I really like the Mantra 1 but I’m still yet to own the Mantra 2 or 3. I don’t think I will be picking up a discounted Mantra 2 though. I like it but I can live without it.
Spyderco Q-Ball (C219GP) Black G-10 Handle, VG10 blade, Ball bearing lock. Eric Glesser design reminiscent of his earlier Dodo design. I like these quirky designs that Spyderco does so well. This may well turn into a very collectible knife if it’s anything like the Dodo.
Spyderco Chaparral Stepped Blue Ti (C152STIBLP) Titanium handle, CTS-XHP blade, back lock. Pretty little knife and ideal gentleman’s folder. I’ve handled Chaparral knives but I’ve never owned any of the models. I do love the stepped blue handle on this one though.
Spyderco Chaparral Stepped Ti (C152STI) Titanium handle, CTS-XHP, back lock. Much like the blue stepped titanium Chaparral but a little more plain. Both very handsome little pocket knives that could be used in office situations.
Spyderco Lil’ Temperance 3 (C69GP3) Black G10 handle, CPM-S30V blade, Compression lock. A folding version of the Spyderco Temperance fixed blade knife.
Spyderco D’Allara 3 (C82GP3) Black G-10 handle, CPM-S30V, Ball bearing lock. Named after New York police officer John D’Allara who was killed at the September 11 attacks in 2001.
Spyderco Karahawk G-10 Satin (C170GP) Black G-10 handle, VG10 blade, back lock. Spyderco’s version of the karambit with a Spydie hole and an Emerson wave opening feature for fast deployment from the pocket.
Spyderco Magnitude (C212CFP) Carbon fiber handle, CPM-S30V blade, Linerlock, flipper. Sweet looking knife designed by knife maker Peter Carey. One of my favorite little knives is the Carey designed Spyderco Firefly which is almost the opposite knife of the Magnitude. At this price point I would have liked some more interesting steel, but such is life.
Spyderco Advocate Ti (C214TIP) Titanium handle, CPM-M4 blade, Frame lock, flipper. The Gayle Bradley designed flipper is a very decent knife. I heard of problems with earlier versions of it but Spyderco worked on them and fixed the issues. The orange peel look is quite interesting on the titanium scales too.
Spyderco Opus (C218GP) G-10 handle, CPM-S30V blade, Liner lock. Designed by German knifemaker Ulrich Hennicke. The Opus is another one of those knives where I couldn’t pull the trigger as it’s not as pretty as it could be. I do like that Spyderco isn’t afraid to focus on function and forget form as this thinking has produced some of the most comfortable and useful knives around. Ugly might be a bit harsh on the Opus but it’s definitely never going to win a beauty contest.
Spyderco Hanan (C227GP) G10 with titanium bolsters handle, CPM-S30V blade, Compression lock, flipper. Designed by knifemaker Brad Southard, the Hanan has a compression lock and a flipper. Ideal gentleman’s folder maybe?
Spyderco Squarehead Lightweight Gray and Black (C193PGY) + (C193PBK) FRN handle, CTS-BD1 blade, liner lock, keychain knife. The budget friendly version of the Squarehead in both the black and the gray will be discontinued.
Pacific Salt Range (C91SYL) (C91PYL) (C91SBK) (C91PBK) (C91PBBK) (C91SBBK) FRN handle, H1 blade, back lock. The steel that can cut and not rust! Spyderco says that the Pacific Salt range will be replaced in 2020 with the Pacific Salt 2.
Spyderco Dragonfly (C28S) (C28SBK2) FRN or Stainless, VG10 blade, backlock. Includes the black FRN and the stainless steel models. The Dragonfly is one of my favorite tiny knives. Super lightweight, very small, but still has a blade big enough to do most daily tasks. I did own the stainless steel version but I didn’t like the extra weight.
Discontinued Spyderco Fixed Blade Knives 2020
I added the discontinued kitchen knife too. So there’s just the one fixed blade and one Spyderco kitchen knife to be discontinued in 2020.
Spyderco Junction (FB38GP) G10 handle, PSF27 blade, full tang. I haven’t used PSF27 steel but it has similar qualities to D2 and uses a “spray forming” process to create it. Designed by Gayle Bradley.
Spyderco Cooks Knife (K11S) Corian handle, VG-10 blade, serrated. Apart from the Santoku I haven’t used Spyderco kitchen knives much. They definitely seem to be improving though.
What do you think of the Spyderco Discontinued list for 2020? Any surprises on there? Anything you think SHOULD have been on it?
Remember to check out all the big knife retailers online to see what discounts they’re doing on the discontinued Spyderco knives. They’ll usually discount until they’re sold out. What will you be buying from the list? Buy Spyderco knives from Blade HQ or Amazon.
